20 of the best Amiga 500, 500+, 600 & 1200 shoot ‘em ups & 2d shooting games

My selection of 20 of the best shmups for Amiga. Some games may have been missed out for reasons stated at the end of the video but I suppose if I could I wouldn’t change more than one or two titles in this list. If you disagree with the selection or think that there were games more worthy please let me know by commenting this video. Thanks!

Not 100% sure but my best bet is that it’s due to memory limitations. Most of Amigas came with only 1MB of RAM and most of those only had 512k of Chip RAM & 512k of Slow RAM & due to Amigas architecture only Chip RAM can be used to address graphics, so often developers were left with only 512k for everything else rather than being able to manage a whole 1MB dynamically.

Why is it that some Amiga games only allowed for either music or sound effects, but not both at the same time?

Yup. . . viewed from top. Exploding bombs, blaster shoots. An space ship shooting to all. I have a friend that spent ALL NIGHT (literally) playing this game without losing. Look for it, I’m sure you’ll like it.

    Thanks!

I hope you tried the Jetstrike as it was like Wings of Fury on steroids. ^__^ Around a 100 different planes & copters to pilot and loads of involving missions. You’d love it if you liked WoF!

Cannon Fodder is one of the most playble games I have ever “wasted” my time on. ^__^ There is also a PC DOS version for your DOSBox however Amiga installment has better sound effects and awesome intro tune with piss-yer-pants lyrics. ^__^

Maybe in a follow up. . . It was damn difficult to pick the top 20. . .

On the other hand I’d be cool to know other’s top 20 choices so if you feel like it list em up (or make a video) & we could see how many of the games I picked and others did would sort of overlay within the best 20. ^__^

Heh. . . R-Type & Super Stardust have not been included since one was the earlier part of a game already on the list and the other I had dodgy version of & couldn’t emualte properly – respectively.

I made about 60-70 videos of shmups before picking the final 20 but I suppose I missed out on some. . . ^__^ Part 2, eh? Maybe 20 runner ups? ^__^ Well, I gotta finish off with all the other genres first then maybe I’ll come back and do the follow up.

There’s so many great shmups on Amiga, the ones you missed imo are

    Amnios, Battle Squadron, Blastar, Datastorm
Disposable Hero, Dragon Breed, Hybris, Katakis, Lethal Xcess, Menace, Overkill, Paradroid 90, R-Type, Smash TV, Star Goose, Star Ray, Super Obliteration, Super Stardust, T-Zero, Wings of Death, X-Out, Xenon 2, Z-Out, Ziriax and about three quarters of the games you mentioned at the end of your vid.

Looks like you need to make a part 2 ;)

I do have a 3D FPS shooters genre for Amiga in mind and also was thining about making a Doom for all available platforms video as it’s one of the very few games that has been released on nearly every platform imagineable. I’m talking PC, Amiga, Jaguar, N64, SNES, Genesis, GBA, PSX, Mobiles and others here. . . Though on the other hand there quite a few decent FPS shooters in their gold times in mid to late nineties. . . Whatever I decide on, I got to finish with my Amiga videos first. 9 more genres!

Yeah, good idea. When you have covered some of those genres, you could make first-person shooter games from the 90. I like the shooting games in this video, though I would like to see a few first-person, but its all up to you. I like the videos alot :)

    Thanks!
I was thinking what genre I should do next though and I decided to make a list of genres that I should cover bearing in mind that many of them would have to be like cross-genred as it’s hard to tell wether some games belong to one or another. Like SimCity, Ports of Call or Civilization for instance. . . The first two may as well be considered economic simulations & strategy games, the third one on the other hand is either a strategy or a simulation. So, I’m kind of considering my options.
